Pilates is now widely used by athletes, celebrities, physicians and virtually anyone interested in improving their overall health and fitness. Pilates creates proper spinal alignment and joint stabilization through the use of various exercises and breathing techniques designed to strengthen the deep torso muscles referred to as the core. This type of movement creates overall body strength, healthy posture and stress free movement that develops both strength and flexibility which provide support and protection of the joints and spine.
The History of Pilates:
The Pilates Method is the result of the evolutionary path of Joseph Pilates. In his youth Pilates suffered with a variety of health issues. In an attempt to improve his condition he exposed himself to a wide variety of disciplines including, boxing, gymnastics, swimming, martial arts and yoga. In 1912 he moved to England and took a position as a self defense instructor with the Scotland Yard. When the First World War broke out Pilates, a German national, was placed in an internment camp where his primary responsibility was to rehabilitate injured veterans. Using the springs from old hospital beds he created the first pieces of equipment which allowed his bedridden patients to exercise against resistance, an innovation that led to his later equipment designs. After the war Pilates moved back to Germany and then immigrated to the United States where he, and his wife Clara, opened their first Pilates studio in a building that they shared with American Ballet Theater. The rest… is history.
